New podcast focuses on TEF

Date: August 8 - 2024

In QAA's latest podcast, our regular host Dr Kerr Castle chairs an expert panel for a lively discussion reflecting on what we've learnt from TEF 2023.

Kerr is joined by Professor Claire Pike (Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education Enhancement at Anglia Ruskin University), Roscoe Hastings (Director of Teaching Enhancement and Excellence at the University of Exeter) and QAA’s Helena Vine (Lead Policy Officer for England), who earlier this year produced a comprehensive qualitative analysis of provider submissions and panel statements from TEF 2023.

‘There are critiques of the TEF process, but it raises some really valuable talking points,’ says Helena. ‘It's an absolute treasure trove of insight of what's happening within the sector. It's some of the best information we've got about what providers based in England are doing for their students at the moment.’

‘It is really great at providing that focus on excellence and enhancement,’ adds Roscoe. ‘Within the current regulatory environment [in England], this is really the only space where we're talking about that enhancement-based activity. The focus “beyond the baseline” is the key part of this.’

He observes, however, that one of the problems with the TEF is that we as a sector aren't always very good at explaining that the baseline itself is already excellent, and that he therefore fears that one of the disadvantages of the current rating system is that it may lose that nuance.

Claire agrees that the TEF usefully raises the profile of education enhancement within institutions and goes on to explain the findings of her own quantitative study of TEF outcomes, which demonstrates the impact that institutions' narratives can have, over and above the pure metrics, on their scores.

‘Of all those providers who achieved a gold rating overall, 71% did so with an initial dataset that was not solidly gold - showing again that to get a gold outcome, the narrative evidence carried significant weight,’ she says. ‘In mirror image, just over half of those who got a bronze did so with a dataset that wasn't solidly bronze - it was a little bit more positive than that.’
